Report of President Phyllis Charter’s Visit to IWCPI
Welcome to the Philippines IIW President Phyllis Charter!
IWCPI National President Amelia "Bibie" Jarin with IWCPI National Representative Reylina "Neneng" Nicolas and IIW Board Director Zenaida "Zeny" Farcon warmly welcomed IIW President Phyllis and her spouse PDG Paul Charter last night at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
IIW President Phyllis will be the Keynote Speaker at the IWCPI 54th National Conference on February 28-29, 2020 at Okada Manila.
Garbology Project IWC Chinatown (D382)
The first project visited by IIWC Pres. Phyllis Charter was that of Upskill Foundation wherein IWC Chinatown has been supporting.
The project is supporting a whole community with 250 students with their education, health and in recycling.
Tyres and interior of tyres are being donated to the fathers of the students to be made to shoes. Unusable airplane tyres are being used to be the soles of slippers. Mothers are the one doing the sewing and crocheting the aluminum rings of cans into bags, over-blouse and ladies accessories and Christmas lanterns. Both fathers and mothers are being paid for the work.
Their children are being given a portion of their school supplies. IWC Chinatown contributes also to the food supplies being given to them, not to mention the monthly one cavan of rice given to them for 5 years through our Past President Elena Ngo.
The 250 students enjoy school supplies, food during school days.
During the visit, we also distributed t-shirts to the students.
IIW President Phyllis Charter visited the Inner Wheel marker installed by Inner Wheel Club of Manila 101 during the term of Club President Maribeth Legado
This is located along Roxas Blvd, corner TM Kalaw, fronting Museong Pambata and adjacent the US Embassy in the heart of Manila, an imposing structure bearing the Mission, Vision, Objects and Core Values of Inner Wheel.
The Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines, Inc. Council of Past National President led by its President Lilita Yuchongtian hosted a Welcome Dinner for IIW President Phyllis Charter and spouse PDG Paul Charter.
IIW President Phyllis Charter visited VSA-St. Francis Arts Philippines, Inc., one of the adopted schools of the Inner Wheel Club of San Francisco del Monte. During the visit, the school’s Executive Director Rebecca Santos showcased the beautiful tapestries and handwoven products (bags, slippers, blouses, vests) uniquely woven using a handloom by the students.
St. Francis School-VSA Arts specializes on special-needs education especially on language and speech development. Part of their curriculum are activities which enable them to express through arts. This project is part of their therapeutic expression at the same time means of livelihood. As Director Santos would always say “The more mistakes, the better. This makes the tapestries unique”. IWC SFDM supports their extra-curricular activities such as the recently concluded UN Day, they also provided Livelihood programs for the parents such as Laundry Detergent Soap, Liquid Hand wash and Fabric Softener making.
IIW President Phyllis was accompanied by IWCPI National President Amelia Jarin, National Representative Reylina Nicolas, IIW Board Director Zeny Farcon together with IWC San Francisco del Monte Club President Paulina Cuntapay, Club Secretary Fretzel Anne Viñas, District 378 Chairman Mary Anne Gutierrez, Vice District Chairman Cynthia Reyes, Past District Chairman Teresita Arcega and Past National President Fe de Guia. Also present is Ms. Asia Pacific International 2019 Chaiyenne Huisman (from Spain) who is very eager to see the hand-woven products.
IIW President Phyllis Charter visited IWC Quezon City Learning Centre, which is considered as one of the oldest maintained Learning Centre among the Inner Wheel Clubs in the Philippines.
This was established by Past International Inner Wheel President Esther Vibal when she was still the Club President in 1972. It has been maintained by the club for almost five (5) decades. The Learning Centre is not only a venue for education for the children but also a central venue of the club in implementing their projects such as their free medical and dental services.
The second day of the Conference started with a Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD. It was followed by the Foundation Hour where donors were recognized by the Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (IWCPFI)
Members had fun during the Sister Club Activity where two “sister” clubs from different Districts meet to gain new friends and strengthen partnership in implementing projects.
It was followed by a heart-warming segment – Babae Ka! (You are a Woman), featuring projects focussed on Women and Children. Audio visual presentations are testimonies of the challenges faced by these women and children battling with depression and anxiety because of their experiences being abandoned, abused physically and emotionally-rabped, battered and bullied, and how our members reached out and helped them so they can move on and live a better and brighter future. This was concluded with the speech of the Guest of Honor and Speaker Past National President Mary Jane Ortega, former Mayor of La Union City and former member of the United Nations Council of Local Authorities, (UNACLA), member of the Steering committees on Public Places, Safer Cities of UN Habitat. In her speech she discussed the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nation and promoting Safer Cities through Social Cohesion.
The conference ended with a Talent Night themed Celebrating Women on Broadway.
After a hectic week, IIW President Phillis and spouse Past District Governor Paul Charter spent the Sunday morning on a tour to the oldest landmark of Manila – Intramuros, also known as the “Walled City” built during the Spanish era. They also visited the Museum of National History.
A Fellowship Dinner was organized by National Conference (NATCON) Chairman Nona Ricafort for IIW President Phyllis and Past District Governor Paul Charter. Present during the dinner are the members of the NATCON Working Committee, the IWCPI National Board of Trustees and friends.
Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines Foundation Inc. (IWCPFI) President Jovita de Jesus and IWCPFI Council of Past Foundation Presidents President Victorina Magadia hosted a Farewell Dinner for IIW President Phyllis Charter and spouse Past District Governor Paul Charter.
The Foundation is the funding-arm and partner in service of the Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines, Inc.
It’s time to say goodbye to our dear IIW President Phyllis Charter and spouse Past District Governor Paul Charter.
