It was indeed a great honour and pleasure to have the International lnner Wheel President visiting Sri Lanka to be the Chief Guest at our District conference.
President Phyllis arrived on the 22nd November accompanied by her husband PDG Paul Charter. They were received at the CIP Lounge of the Bandaranayake lnternational Airport by District Chairman Diana and National Representative Shanta together with their husbands.
The next morning she attended the District Conference which was held at the iconic and colonial style Galle Face Hotel situated in the centre of Colombo facing the Indian Ocean. The conference was well attended and enjoyed by all.
President Phyllis and her husband and some senior members were hosted to dinner by the National Representative and her husband.
The following morning President Phyllis was interviewed by one of the National TV stations after which she attended a meeting with the District Executive committee followed by lunch hosted by National Representative Shanta.
District Chairman Diana and her husband hosted the District Executive Committee and Past leaders to dinner on that day.
On the 25th and 26th she met members of nine clubs from the Western Province namely Colombo Central, Mt Lavinia, Colombo NawaUdana, Colombo, West, Colombo Mid Town, Maharagama, Colombo, Wattala and Jaela/Kandana to meet and discuss their work and projects at Luncheon and Dinner meetings hosted by the respective clubs.
The IIW President made a presentation of equipment to the oldest Maternity Hospital in the country on behalf of IW club of Colombo West. Her husband Paul too had an opportunity to attend a joint meeting of two of the Rotary clubs of Colombo – Colombo Fort and Colombo Mid City.
Her itinerary next took her to North Central Province of Sri Lanka where she visited the ancient city of Anuradhapura. On the way President Phyllis stopped over at Kurunegala for breakfast which was hosted by the IW club of Ethugalpura. After breakfast, a drive round Kurunegala was arranged to view the scenic beauty of the area. A formal meeting then took place with the members of the IW club of Ethugalpura to discuss and see their projects. This was followed by lunch hosted by the club.
Phyllis then proceeded to Anuradhapura where the members of IW club of Anuradhapura took her to see the Sacred Sri MahaBodiya and Ruwanweli Seya which are of great historical interest and hosted her to dinner.
Next morning after a meeting with the members of IW club of Anuradhapur, the President participated in a donation of wheel chairs by District 322 to the Anuradhapura Base Hospital.
She then came back to Negombo for the night and had a meeting with the members of the IW club of Negombo where a project was completed. ln the evening she was taken to the VIP Lounge of the airport by the National Representative Shanta for her return flight to London.
Her visit was an encouragement to the IW members of Sri Lanka and we thank her for accepting our invitation to attend the District conference.
