IW members from District 248 Bulgaria had the pleasure and honor to welcome IIW President Phyllis Charter at their annual training seminar in Veliko Turnovo on 12th and 13th of October 2019.
During her one week stay in Bulgaria IIW President Phyllis Charter was guided and accompanied by BD Yanislava Ilieva.
On the first day of her visit, October the 10th, President Phyllis Charter visited IW Club Pleven, where she met the Chairman of District 248 prof.d-r. Snezhana Tisheva and the ladies from IW Clubs Pleven, Lovech and Svishtov. The 3 clubs presented and discussed their projects, welcomed new members and in the evening had a friendly dinner together with Phyllis Charter. On the next day, before leaving for Veliko Turnovo, Phyllis Charter saw some historical and cultural places in Pleven.
The training seminar for newly elected officers in the clubs is held every year in District 248. For the first time it took place in Veliko Turnovo, where no IW Club is established. The town however is the old capital of Bulgaria and its historic heart which the ladies from District 248 Bulgaria wanted to show President Phyllis Charter.
On 12th of October, the most important event, Training seminar occurred. The IIW President was the first lecturer at the training seminar of District 248 and talked about the future of IW and the modern trends in the relationship with Rotary and other organizations. President Phyllis Charter learned about the successful long term projects of District 248 Bulgaria, the new ideas for joint projects under the theme “Together we can” and the current extension challenges in the District. The training seminar continued with presentations and interactive round table discussions about the role of the President and the Secretary of a club, the financial policy and obligations of the Treasurer and communications between the District and IIW.
The same evening the gala dinner took place attended by nearly 150 IW members and guests. President Phyllis Charter was warmly welcomed by the chairman of District 248, the District committee and all members. On the behalf of Rotary Bulgaria the Past District Governor Valentin Stoyanov greeted President Phyllis Charter and all members of IW District 248 Bulgaria
The evening was full of friendly talks, nice music and dancing.
The following day, during a pleasant walk President Phyllis was shown the beautiful old town of Veliko Turnovo, the Tsareves castle and Historical museums.
On 14th of October Phyllis Charter left charming Veliko Turnovo to visit some other clubs in District 248 Bulgaria. The first stop was in Kazanlak, where members from IW Club Kazanlak welcomed IIW President by Bulgarian traditions with bread and salt at the Church monument Shipka. Before the working meeting, followed by informal dinner, President Phyllis Charter was shown the UNESCO protected World Heritage Site- the Thracian tomb, dated back from the 4 century BCE. The program included a visit to the Historical museum and the private Art gallery “Atelieto”, owned by the President of IW Club Kazanlak Vanya Zapryanova, where club projects were presented and discussed. Phyllis Charter congratulated the ladies from IWC Kazanlak for their project “Donate life and help a child’s heart to start beating” for supporting couples with reproductive problems.
On the next day after breakfast IIW President Phyllis Charter and the accompanying group started to the town of Stara Zagora where they were greeted by the Presidents of IWC Stara Zagora and IWC Beroe. After a short walk they visited the neolith dwelling and the Museum of Religions. In the evening Phyllis Charter attended the working meeting of the clubs and learned about their projects. She also put the pins to 5 new members from IW Clubs Stara Zagora, Stara Zagora Beroe and Haskovo. The day finished with a nice friendly dinner in the beautiful restaurant Vereya.
The last day of President Phyllis Charter’s visit to District 248 Bulgaria was devoted to the capital of the country Sofia. On the 16th of October she arrived from Stara Zagora to Sofia and was warmly welcomed by the ladies of the youngest club in District 248, IW Club Sofia. They took President Phyllis Charter to a walking sightseeing tour around Sofia to show her St. Alexander Nevski cathedral, St. Sofia Church, The Russian Church, The Royal Garden & National Art Gallery, Bulgarian National Bank, Atanasova Burov square and the fountain, Presidency, St. George Rotonda and St. Petka Church. The members of IWC Sofia, all under 40 years old, had a working meeting with IIW President and enjoyed dinner in a friendly atmosphere at Ramada hotel.
Next day, October 17th, President Phyllis Charter and her husband Paul were seen off at Sofia airport, to their flight back home.
