Donation Of Water Filters to Cancer Survivors

The rural population of the country has less access to fresh and clean water supply as compared to the urban populace. Contaminated water spreads diseases like typhoid, cholera and dysentery due to the presence of bacteria, virus, worms, parasites, molluscs, pollutants, etc., in unfiltered drinking water.

The Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWC KL) has been supplying Ceramic Dome Gravity Filters to the ‘orang asli’ or natives in the central region of the country. The Inner Wheel Club of Alor Setar (IWC AS) decided to purchase these filters. During a programme for cancer survivors that the Club members attended in late 2019, it came to their knowledge that many cancer survivors hailed from remote areas and did not have access to clean water.

The Club then bought 10 water filters and in turn, IWC KL generously donated another four filters to the Club. This filter can be cleaned with a soft brush or sponge and can purify up to 5,000 litres of water before it needs to be replaced.

Plans were put in place from as early as February 2020 to have a special programme to give away the water filters to 14 deserving cancer survivors, but due to the exponential rise in COVID-19 cases and the frequent lockdowns imposed by the Government, IWC AS had to keep postponing its programme.

On 19 March 2022, an opportunity presented itself when Cancer Survivors Malaysia availed a slot for the Club to give away the 14 water filters during their I WANT TO LIVE programme organised at a hotel in Alor Setar. More than 100 cancer survivors each with their care-givers attended this programme. The Director of Health Services of Kedah officiated the programme and the opening ceremony saw the release of balloons and confetti into the air. Several professionals and experts were invited to deliver talks on managing cancer, where to go for help, including financial assistance, and the importance of early detection.

IWC AS was then called upon to present the water filters to 14 recipients who had been identified by the Organisers as the most deserving. Vice-President Tunku Zamharir, representing the President, accompanied by Past President Padmini and Secretary Shantha, were indeed happy to present the filters to the recipients who expressed their thanks and heartfelt appreciation.

It was indeed a memorable morning as the presentation of the water filters was a long-overdue and much awaited event for the Club.
