Members of Edgbaston Convention Inner Wheel in GB&I District 6 were very proud to present the prestigious Margarette Golding Award to Lyn Ankcorn in recognition of her involvement with the management of Birmingham Crisis Centre for over 30 years, providing a safe place for women and children suffering domestic abuse.
Having supported her husband John since 1981 throughout the huge challenge of setting up a refuge, whilst bringing up children and working part-time, Lyn became more closely involved with the management, training, and administration work once the new purpose-built Birmingham Crisis Centre was opened in 1987. It provides 24 units for mothers and children, with many onsite facilities, and has strong links with the local community.
Now a Trustee, Lyn is very modest about her involvement over the years, sourcing finance and trained staff to provide skilled support 24/7 and keeping abreast of current legislation. Help and advice is given about housing and benefits, legal services and court cases, and the Centre staff continue to support families when they eventually move into their own independent accommodation.
Lyn is warm, friendly, and caring, always ready to help, and has undoubtedly gone that extra mile over the past 30 years. She is very unassuming, but her dedication to this wonderful project is truly outstanding.
Because of Covid restrictions, this award was made via Zoom, on 21st April 2021, with the certificate and pin being shown on screen. The presentation will be made in person when Covid restrictions have been lifted, and members can meet with Lyn in person.
