Restoring eyesight – Cataract Surgery

Posted by | Jan 30, 2019 |

Cataracts are a major eye problem in Nepal and according to Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness Survey, cataracts were responsible for 65 per cent of blindness in 2010 in the country. Cataracts are associated with ageing and hence is unavoidable; however, cataract surgery has proven to be an effective treatment. Hence, Inner Wheel Club of New Road City has been volunteering at Cataract Microsurgical Workshop since 2010.

From 3rd to 5th December 2018, eye screening was done and 2700 patients were screened within these 3 days. Total of 735 patients were operated for cataract from 6th to 8th December. Members of Inner Wheel Club of New Road City helped promote the workshop before the event and were facilitators at the workshop, which is held annually at the Royal Thai Monastery, Lumbini. Majority of the patients were from Lumbini, Ramgram and nearby areas. It has been wonderful for our members to work together with Dr. Sanduk Ruit, also known as ‘the God of Sight’ who has worked to restore more than 150,000 people’s eye sight in his career so far.

Individuals who were operated were really happy and were very grateful to the entire team.
