Under the auspices of Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Seacoast a unique Â project Â â€śMarathon for underprivileged childrenâ€ť was organisedÂ at village Khanivali, Palghar District, India.
â€śAssociation of International Marathon and Distance Runnersâ€ť(AIMS) is an organisation which certifies marathon races organized all over the world.Â To encourage running as a sport amongst underprivileged children, AIMS has been sponsoring races in many developing countries for last few years. They were looking out for a partner in India to execute the event for them.
Inner Wheel club of Bombay Seacoast took the initiative and approached them in the month of July 2015.Â

On 24th January 2016 â€śAIMS Childrenâ€™s Series 2016â€ť was organized for boys and girls of â€śThe Anand Laxman Chandavarkar Vidhyalay Secondary Schoolâ€ť.Â A total ofÂ 500 children took part.
The race was organized as per the International guidelines under the guidance of Mr. Amit Sheth, Brand Ambassador of Comradeâ€™s Marathon Association, South Africa.
The ground preparation for conducting marathon started almost four months prior to the date of the event. We held a medical checkup camp for all the students. Vitamins, iron tablets, deworming tablets and medication as prescribed by doctors were given. Only those students that were certified fit for running by the doctor were permitted to take part in marathon. Â Â We had a motivational speaker address the children three months prior to race date on the importance of sports and running. The children and their Physical Training teachers from school were taught basic stretching exercises. Children started training on the route.
The route was planned in such a way that it would be free of traffic. Coordination was done with local police authority. Proper medical and water stations were planned on route.
The Secretary of AIMS Mr. Hugh Jones came from London to attend the event and stayed overnight in the village. District Chairman Dr. Sandhya Bhat flagged off some of the races.
18 winners in all were awarded with branded bicycles, a pair of BATA running shoes and Trophy and Certificate.
All the participants including entire school staff received gifts which included an analogue Wrist watch, a pair of canvas shoes (children had been individually measured up the previous week), two pairs of socks, a tee shirt, school backpack, a blanket, Cap, Water bottle, pens, notebook, Geometry box, skipping rope, two rubber balls, packets of Kellogs, Enerzal, Meggi and toiletries. All the Participants received finishersâ€™ medal (designed in Australia by AIMS) and Certificate, a personal instant picture fromÂ INSTAX camera wearing their medal, The Participants were given banana before the run and nutritious lunch after the race. The Principal and Physical training teachers of the school were also gifted bicycle.
