Prayers & Graces

Prayers & Graces from around the Inner Wheel World

1. Acrostic Prayer, Prayer Book, District 4, GB&I

Inner Wheel

Instil in us, O Lord, the true meaning of friendship
Never let us lose sight of the needs of others.
Nor forget to offer our help.
Ever mindful of our own shortcomings,
Realising that we too often need help.

Whenever and wherever the need for service,
Help us to be ready to serve.
Endeavouring to make our Club worthwhile,
Ensuring that we have not
Lived our lives in vain.

2. Prayer: Prayer Book, District 4, GB&I

Prayer for Mary’s Meals

Our Father
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us for the times when
we take more than our share of
the bread that belongs to us all.
Let us help You fill the starving
With good things
Not with scraps from our table.
Teach us how to share what is not
ours to keep.
Clothe us with Your love
That we may complete each good
Work you created us to do.
Place in our hearts Your
Compassion for each starving child
And use our little acts of love so
That they starve no more.

3. Prayer: District 4, GB&I Prayer Book

Lord, as members of Inner Wheel
Make us the instruments of Thy peace
Where there is hatred, let us sow love,
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is discord, harmony,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand.
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

4. Prayer: District 4, GB&I Prayer Book

Lord, we come together as members of Inner Wheel
To partake of this meal.
And so we thank You for all Thy gifts,
But especially for the gift of Friendship
And the privilege of Service.
As we share in this food may we ever be
Mindful of the needs of others.

5. Iroquois Prayer - Giving Thanks

When you arise in the morning,

give thanks for the morning light,

for your life and strength.

Give thanks for your food

and the joy of living.

If you see no reason for giving thanks,

the fault lies in yourself.

Thanks to the Divine Creator for all the Blessings !

6. Prayer GB & I Dist 4 Prayer Book

Dear Lord,

In a world where many are lonely
We thank you for our friendship and community.
In a world where many are despairing
We thank you for hope.
In a world that many find meaningless
We thank you for faith.
In a world where many are hungry
We thank you for food.
Help us, who have so much
Remember those who have so little.

7. Prayer GB & I Dist 4 Prayer Book

Prayer for Inner Wheel

Dear Lord
The Inner Wheel is an unbroken circle.
Help us to use that circle to encompass as many as possible
In acts of true friendship.
Let the movement of the wheel motivate us
To personal service
Not for our own satisfaction but for the wider good.
Let the wheel move our thoughts further afield so that we
Foster understanding internationally and acquaint ourselves
With the lives and needs of those in other countries.
Let the circuit of the wheel be a constant motivation
To see, to listen and to actively participate.

8. Prayer / Collect, Wales, GB & I Inner Wheel

Instill in us O Lord the true meaning of friendship
Never let us lose sight of the needs of others
Nor forget to offer our help
Ever mindful of our own shortcomings
Realising we, too, need help often.
Whenever and wherever the need for service
Help us to be ready to serve
Ensuring we have not
Lived in vain.

{The wording of the Collect is attributed to Dulcie Saunders, a member and Club Delegate of the Inner Wheel Club of Kempsey, New South Wales. At a District 27 Meeting, she was given permission to read the Collect to all the delegates present, and it was well received. When Port Macquarie West Inner Wheel Club was formed on 4 October 1976, and Chartered on 30 April 1977, Dulcie became a Charter member of this Club. On the night, she presented a copy of the Inner Wheel Collect done on parchment by her brother}

9. Prayers Native American Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer from Inner Wheel Mexico

We return thanks to our mother,
the earth, which sustains us.

We return thanks to the rivers and streams,
which supply us with water.

We return thanks to all herbs,
which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.

We return thanks to the moon and stars,
which have given to us their light when the sun was gone.

We return thanks to the sun,
that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.

Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit,
in Whom is embodied all goodness, and
Who directs all things for the good of Her children.

10. Poem Unknown source

Success is the speaking of words of praise
In cheering other people's ways,
In doing the best you can
With every task and plan
It's silence when your speech would hurt
Politeness when your neighbour's curt
It's deafness when the scandal flows,
And sympathy to others' woes
It's loyalty when duty calls,
It's courage when disaster falls,
It's patience when the hours are long;
It's found in laughter and in song;
It's in the silent time of prayer,
In happiness and in despair,
In all of life and nothing less
We find the thing we call success.

District 12 Prayer

Father, accept our thanks we pray,

For blessings showered on us each day,

And may Thy love in friendship seal,

All members of the Inner Wheel.
