District 920, composed of 5 clubs in Reunion Island and 3 clubs in Madagascar had the privilege to welcome President Charlotte DE VOS in Reunion Island, on the occasion of the 23rd Assembly which took place in Saint-Denis, capital of the island. Members of Madagascar joined us for the event.
After a warm welcome reserved to President Charlotte at the airport. We had breakfast in a lovely café where a press conference was arranged before going to the house of Jasmine Sery who was privileged to host President Charlotte.
The first evening was hosted by Rose-may, for a typical buffet of creole food cooked by many members.
IW Club Saint-Paul/ Etang Salé has planned a social project: a sea safari to see dolphins and whales inpatient children and teens suffering from psychological distress as a result of violence or rape. But, because of the bad weather, the boat couldn’t leave the port and the project had to be postponed after IIW President’s visit.
After geocaching in the morning and lunch in a restaurant located on the seaside, we went to the Home Hospitality Evening organized by IW Club Saint-Denis, the club District Chairman Maryse belongs to.
The interesting and unique project of District 920 was presented and we could visit the area provided for a sewing atelier provided to unemployed women with 3 main goals: give work to women, dressmaking Inner Wheel members’ traditional gowns for the next Convention, rehabilating traditions of the island.
Before dinner, we had a show choir conducted by Audrey, a young talented choir master.
The Opening Ceremony of the 23rd Assembly took place in the reception lounge of the City Hall of Saint-Denis.
It started with the parade of the clubs then welcome of Executive Committee, then our Guest of Honour, IIW President Charlotte.
Then, the bearers of flags were ready for the moving parade of flags and Ceremony of Anthems: first, Belgium in honour of our IIW President, then Madagascar, then France as Reunion Island is a French overseas region.
Then, the Inner Wheel song, “Standing together” was sung by Audrey, the choir master and all the Inner Wheel members eagerly burst into chorus.
Business session in the afternoon with interlude with a children choir.
Talents’night in the evening in the lovely garden of the Region Venue. Each club of the district made a show, either dancing, singing, acting…. Fun and enthusiasm!
The day started with a very interesting presentation from Mr Marodon, eminent speaker, a chemist, fond of local medicinal plants, president of APLAMEDOM, association created in 1999 for the protection of those plants. Every year, a competition is organized in schools to raise awareness about ethno botanical heritage in the island.
After an interlude by an orchestra of young musicians, a new business session with financial review, Chairman’s report, Elections of the Incoming Executive Committee return, presentation of the Elected Committee of Ditrict 920, exchange of presents and banners. A photo session came before lunch.

After the District 920 Assembly, Charlotte had the opportunity to visit the island and we enjoyed geocachings a few days more before going back home one week after her arrival in the island.
And then it was time for President Charlotte to go back to her family, and time for Good-byes!
