International Day to end Obstetric Fistula

23rd May 2022

May 23rd is the International Day to ‘End Obstetric Fistula’. It raises awareness on this medical condition which is a serious childbirth injury.

The theme of this year is ‘End fistula now – invest in quality health and empower communities'.

Obstetric fistula is caused by protracted labour, which occurs when an unborn baby is blocked from exiting the pelvis.

Women can develop fistula as they cannot afford transportation to health facilities or the services of a skilled birth attendant. Other causes are malnutrition and teenage pregnancy.

A great number of women and girls live with this condition.

They should be helped to recover and rebuild their lives.
