UBUNTU- PARA Sports Meet for Physically Challenged People (District 329)

Inner Wheel Clubs of District 329

District Chairman- Mrs. Jyoti Mahipal

Date- 14 May 2022

‘UBUNTU’ – ‘We Win Together’ was a unique event organised by Inner Wheel District 329 on 14-May-22 (Saturday) at the Gitanjali Stadium where more than 400 children and young adults who are either physically challenged or have intellectual disabilities, participated in a PARA Sports Meet. The Chief Guest was the Honourable Mayor of Kolkata Mr Firhad Hakim, though he was unable to attend being on an extremely busy schedule.

The competition was flagged off by District Chairman Mrs Jyoti Mahipal along with IW dignitaries, Past Association Presidents and incoming IIW Editor/Media Manager 2022-23 Prabha Raghunandan and IIW Board Director 2021-22 Mamta Gupta. Throughout the meet, the zeal of the children was infectious and their success or failure brought both smiles and tears onto the eyes of the audience. They represented homes like ‘New Procheshta’, North Calcutta Sumpurna, Asha Bhawan Centre, Maheshtala Aastha, Amtala Asha and so forth, all located in and around Kolkata and also from far off places like Bagnaan in the Hooghly district.

An extraordinary march-past to the beat of the Inner Wheel song at the opening was a heartwarming sight, to see the children walk past with the help of their parents, guardians, teachers or care givers. Several races for boys and girls of differential capabilities ensued witnessing “severely challenged” individuals taking part. The races were followed with shot-put throws and in between girls from ‘Chiranabin After Care’ danced to two beautiful numbers along with presentation of rigorous physical exercise and yoga. It is a matter of pride to know that on field, there were 3 girls who have been selected to represent India in the able-bodied International Women’s Football team. Some of them have also participated and won medals in Special Olympics held in Abu Dhabi in 2019.

For the organisers, all the children were winners and UBUNTU that includes essential human virtues: compassion and humanity was fulfilled in every respect.
