Pink It For Cancer — IWD 2022 Outreach Programme For Women

The Inner Wheel Club of Subang Selangor (IWCSS) organised a Medical Camp for Women in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022. In line with the 2021-2022 theme of PINK FIRST, the camp was aptly known as PINK IT FOR CANCER, with an emphasis on women’s health and awareness.

This outreach community programme for women was held at Sri Muda, Shah Alam in Selangor. In December 2021, this area was badly flooded and the devastation was colossal. What compounded matters was that the families who live here are mainly from the B40 (nationally, the bottom 40%, the lowest income) group and they lost the little that they had.

President Indira of IWCSS, former Director of Business Development at the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), coordinated this camp. The main aim of the project was to create awareness among these women to better understand health-related issues and take ownership of their own health and well-being.

The Camp comprised both medical tests and talks. The tests included breast examination, pap smear, blood pressure check, body mass index (BMI), as well as hepatitis B and hepatitis C tests.

In terms of medical talks, Dr Dalilah Kamaruddin of the NCSM gave a clear and informative talk on “Breast and Cervical Cancer” and the signs to look out for, importance of screening and early detection and where to seek the right treatment. The response from the audience was good as the Q & A session witnessed several questions being asked.

Serum Initiative is a social enterprise which started during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide hygiene supplies to the underserved communities. Ms Sivasni of Serum Initiative gave a talk on reusable sanitary pads made by the Rohingya Women Development Network in Malaysia, and once again, the participants showed much interest.

Over 80 participants attended the event and received goody bags and lunch packs. It was indeed a gratifying day for IWCSS as the event was a huge success. The Club extends sincere appreciation to Mr Yugarajah, Council Member/Chairman of Residents’ Representative Council, Zone 9, Shah Alam for sponsoring the venue, Dr Dalilah and team from NCSM for all the medical screening, Dr Malar Segarmurthy and the Mahila team from Sathya Sai International Organisation Malaysia (SSIOM) for the registration and meals, Kimberly-Clark for the women’s toiletries, Dr Soma for the pH-balanced skin cream and Mr Ling Sze Nin and team from Serum Initiative for the reusable sanitary pads.

A big shout out to all the lovely ladies from IWCSS for coordinating, executing and looking into all the details to ensure a hassle free and successful event that strictly adhered to the government’s standard operating procedures as the COVID-19 pandemic was still prevalent.

It was indeed a day of Women Empowering Women.
