The fourth General Meeting of the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWCKL) was held on 7th October 2021, but this was a meeting with a difference. Puan Sri Wendy Ong, the patron of the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation of Malaysia (ADFM) was invited by the Club to give a talk on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, in conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Month.
Puan Sri Wendy stressed on the importance of preventing dementia and the role that the ADFM plays in supporting people with dementia, as well as their care providers and the dementia community.
Toh Puan Aishah Ong, IWCKL’s Honorary Member, is a founding member of ADFM over 24 years ago. The Honorary Chairman of ADFM, Datuk Yim Khai Kee, also graciously attended the virtual talk along with 43 members of the Club, who welcomed him warmly.
Members learnt that dementia is a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think or even make decisions, all of which interfere with carrying out routine activities. Puan Sri Wendy explained that Alzheimer‘s disease is the most common type of dementia, and the greatest risk factor is advancing age. She shared tips to prevent or slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s, including regular exercise, a healthy and balanced diet, sufficient mental stimulation and an active social life. Care givers also must be supported and helped as they are invariably at significant risk of various health issues.
During the Meeting, approval was granted to present a RM5,000 cheque from the Club to ADFM for its “10,000,000 Steps to Early Diagnosis” Fundraising and Awareness Campaign.
IWCKL sincerely thank Puan Sri Wendy Ong for the insightful and engaging 45-minute talk, and although sobering, it is important to be prepared for the onset of this disease.
This talk is in line with International Inner Wheel’s focus on health for the 2021-2022 term.
