Inner Wheel Mombasa supports education from nursery to diploma

Renovation Of Nursery School At Makanzani, Mombasa District

The Inner Wheel Club of Mombasa had built a single classroom at the Makanzani Nursery School in 1992-93. Over the years, termites infested the wooden beams and framework. As a result, the classroom was dilapidated.

The Club managed to renovate the classroom with extremely generous support from the Rotary Club of Mombasa and a few kind donors. The classroom was completed in time for the re-opening of school after the holidays.

The renovation also took into consideration the shortage of water in the area. Rainwater collection tanks were placed at strategic positions.

Both the Rotary Club of Mombasa and the Inner Wheel Club of Mombasa officially re-opened the school on Sunday, 11th July 2021.

The Club is grateful to the generous donors, and also to Rotarians Gafoor Pasta, Bhupinder Singh Birgi, and Nandu Acharya, who are spouses of IWC Mombasa members, for their time and dedication. Members wish to thank Mr Malkit Sagoo, the building contractor, for making sure that the project was completed.

An ongoing project of the Inner Wheel Club of Mombasa is the sponsoring of six students for their education. Three students are in secondary education, i.e. two in Form 2 (equivalent to the 10th grade) and one in Form 4 (12th grade). Another three are studying for their diploma in hairdressing, accounts, and ECDE (early childhood development education), respectively.

It is gratifying that two students who started in 2019, have completed their studies, sat for exams in August, and are waiting for their results. One of them studied dressmaking and the other, beauty and hairdressing. After graduating, they will work initially as assistants. Then, they may venture out on their own so that they can support their siblings.
