Margarette Golding Award to Girija Menon (2020/21)

International Inner Wheel bestowed the Margarette Golding Award for highly commendable personal service to Girija Menon on behalf of the Inner Wheel Club of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (District 330) in recognition of her service to early intervention and education of children with learning challenges. The certificate dated 30 June 2021 was signed by IIW President, Dr Bina Vyas.

A presentation ceremony was organised by National Representative Ambika Menon. It was on a sunny day of 8th August, 2021, at 11 a.m. on the veranda overlooking the garden at Mrs Girija’s residence where the programme was held.

NR Ambika had invited key District and Inner Wheel Club of Petaling Jaya officers to witness and join in the joyous occasion. All present already had their two doses of COVID-19 vaccination and social distancing was being observed as much as possible.

Video conferencing was arranged by PDC Padmini Menon for viewing by family members (at home and abroad) and IWC Petaling Jaya members. So, in fact, it was not a small celebration but virtually a great one!

NR Ambika welcomed the guests who were present in person. From District 330 were IPDC Shanti Menon and PDC Padmini Menon. From IWC PJ were President Lysa Kuruvilla, IPP Alamelu Nachiappan , PP Monica Chong and Past Deputy NR Sheela Wadhwani. Included were two gentlemen, Rotarian PP Balram Menon (spouse of Mrs Girija) and Geetha Govind (spouse of IPDC Shanti). She then spoke briefly about the Margarette Golding Award for the benefit of all watching the ceremony.

IPDC Shanti read the citation of Mrs Girija. It was during IPDC Shanti’s tenure that the nomination and the award were announced.

The certificate was then presented to Mrs Girija by NR Ambika. IPP Alamelu, in representing IWC PJ, had the honour of pinning the Margarette Golding Award brooch. IPP Alamelu was responsible for suggesting and submitting Girija’s name for the nomination with resounding approvals from all IWC Petaling Jaya members.

In her thank you speech, Mrs Girija said that receiving the award was never in her wildest dream. She thanked IPP Alamelu for making it happen. She also expressed her gratitude to IPDC Shanti and Past NR Alice Lau for their part in submitting the nomination papers to International Inner Wheel. Past NR Alice was viewing online all the way from Sibu in East Malaysia.

Mrs Girija has been successfully working with children with disabilities since the 1980s. As a cancer survivor and faced with her own health challenges, she has been and is still undaunted about sacrificing her time and effort in her commitment towards these children. Her Facebook page is always inundated with grateful messages from parents whose children have passed through her hands and have been able to lead a normal life. Now, at the age of 68, Girija hopes to go on doing her bit for these children as long as she can.

Mrs Girija is also a founding member of IWC Petaling Jaya, a Past President, a Rotarian spouse, a mother and grandmother of committed Inner Wheel members.

With this award, we stand and applaud Past President Girija Menon.
