District Twinning between Croatia & Italy

Twinning is a process which is in line with goals of Inner Wheel such as fostering international understanding and expanding true friendship. In this particular case it started in an unusual way, at the Meeting of International Business and Professional Women (BPW) where the President of BPW Rijeka, Croatia Doris Sosic and the International Social Organiser Teresa Iorio Caldarulo from  District 210 C.A.R.F., Italy had met. Teresa Iorio Caldarulo asked Doris Sosic to connect her with the Croatian District. Mrs Sosic asked for the assistance from the member of Rotary club Rijeka Dubravko Kuseta, and he managed to connect her with the District Chairman 2017/2018 District 191 Croatia Snjezana Petrovic Tkalcec. So, the contact was established.

District 210 C.A.R.F. Italy consists of 47 clubs, and activities were focused on women providing them skills for future employment, in other words coaching them on manual trades.

District 191 Croatia consists of 13 clubs and at that time activities were directed on activities under the title Recycling is important, in other words the District was focused on collecting books, games, soft toys (teddybears) for reuse in kindergartens. District 191 Croatia did not have any experience in twinning at that time.

Signing of the Contact Resolution was scheduled for 21st May 2018, in a beautiful Villa Romanazzi Carducci in town Bari, Italy at the time of visit from the 50th IIW president Kapila Gupta. At the same time the 40th anniversary of the IW Club Bari Levante was held.

The return visit was organized in March 2019, when 24 Inner Wheel friends and 8 Rotary members from Italy came to Zagreb. Their hosts were 26 IW friends from Croatia. On the 22nd March 2019, a tour through the capital city Zagreb was organized and at night the protocol part was held were greetings were exchanged including detailed information about both districts.  Dinner and socializing followed and on March  2019. a visit to the National Park Plitvice Lakes and a social event in Old Town Dubovac was organized.

During the return visit, the District Chairman 2017/2018 Snjezana Petrovic Tkalcec said: „We are starting to write a new book about a friendship and project under the title Meet the Unknown! This is just the first chapter – Meeting new friends¨ A question was raised as to how to write a new chapter.

Teresa Iorio Caldarulo proposed dissemination on acts of the Istanbul Convention and joint project on preventing gender violence. The proposal was accepted due to the fact that many Croatian clubs are already assisting safe houses which provide shelter to victims of violence. With that intention just before the International Day of fighting against violence on women which was held on November, 25th, IW Club Prelog organised a professional meeting under the title Life without violence. The meeting was organised in collaboration with association of social workers of the Krizevci-Koprivnica County, Ministry of Internal Affairs of the County Medjimurje and Mayor of town Prelog. I believe that mutual actions will contribute to the stronger connectivity of the Districts 210 and 191 and further development of the newfound friendship.
