One of the objects of Inner Wheel is to Promote International Understanding. Inner Wheel Club of Kuopio (district 139, Finland) is doing that in various ways. We are supporting immigrants and asylum seekers in our own city and neighborhood and we are also giving financial help to an orphanage in Itete, Tanzania. But we also like to travel and meet Inner Wheel members in other countries and make new friends!
We started our “Inner Wheel Tourism” in 2015. Our first trip was to London, UK. Since then we’ve visited Dublin in Ireland, Edinburgh in Scotland and Milan in Italy. In each of these cities we were welcomed by a local Inner Wheel Club and felt warm friendship and fellowship, without any barriers.
Visiting Iceland had come up in our wishes for years, and this year it was finally possible to go there. We contacted district 136 and got an invitation to visit the club of Gorðum. The chair of the district Marta Maria Skúladóttir is a member of the club. She along with Sif Jónsdóttir, the president of the club, and Laufey Jóhannsdóttir and many other members, welcomed us warmly. While having coffee and enjoying cakes and Icelandic delicacies that Laufey Jóhannsdóttir and Vilborg Runólfsdóttir had made by themselves, by traditional Icelandic recipes, we had a chance to share our practices and experiences of running our meetings, fundraising and serving our local communities. In many ways we seemed to have similar practices but we also got some great new ideas that we want to introduce in our own club. Gorðum Inner Wheel Club is a wonderful example of great age range: while having members in late 40’s or early 50’s, the oldest members are over 90 years old and still very active!
The Inner Wheel Club of Kuopio wants to thank our new Icelandic friends! We hope to keep in touch with you and naturally welcome you to visit us whenever possible!
